The Gateway for Difference

Updated: Jan 23, 2019

by Arathi Vinod

Being a student-teacher for CREATE has been one of the most rewarding experiences for me. During my first semester at Cal, I had the opportunity to teach visual arts to third- through fifth-graders from Washington Elementary School. From local murals around Berkeley to the minimalist art of Germany and the obsessional art of Japan, my student-teacher partner and I took students on a trip around the world with our art lessons. Through our weekly projects, I got to know every student and was able to form close bonds with them by the end of my time with them. CREATE became my gateway into making a difference in my society.

Not only did CREATE enable me to make an impact on people, but it also helped me find others who did the same for me. By becoming a part of CREATE, I felt as though I had joined a caring family. Through workshops and fun socials, I made many close friends to share thoughts and ideas with. I am so thankful to CREATE for helping me become a part of such a welcoming team of creative minds!
